Why Do Some Workplace Conversations Stay With You All Day? Understanding Emotional Triggers + Your Nervous System

Have you ever had a conversation at work that you stayed with you long after it ended?
A colleague’s tone.

A difficult email.
A challenging meeting.
The conversation may be over, yet your body still feels like it is happening.
You replay the words.
You wonder what you could have said differently.
You feel tension, frustration or unease.
This is a very human response.
Our nervous system is constantly scanning for signals of safety and threat. When something feels emotionally challenging, our body can move into a stress response, even when we are physically safe.
The reaction is not always about the conversation itself.
Sometimes it is about what the moment represents:
feeling unheard.
feeling judged.
feeling undervalued.
feeling uncertain.
Your nervous system is trying to protect you.
It is not a sign that you are too sensitive.
It is a sign that your body has registered something important.
I know this feeling personally.
There was a time when I would replay workplace conversations long after they had finished.
I would analyse what was said, what I could have done differently and whether I had been misunderstood.
The conversation had ended, yet my mind was still trying to find answers.
Now, when I notice those thoughts starting to loop, I pause.
I acknowledge what I am feeling and I use tapping to help calm my nervous system and create space around the emotion.
The conversation may not change.
The other person’s words may not change.
The difference is that my response can change.
I can move from reacting to responding.
That shift has been incredibly powerful.
Why EFT (Tapping) Can Help
The first step is awareness.
When we notice what is happening within us, we create the opportunity to respond differently.
This is where EFT tapping can help.
Research by Dr Peta Stapleton and other researchers has explored how Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) can support emotional regulation and help reduce stress responses.
EFT combines gentle tapping on acupressure points with focused attention on the emotion or issue that feels difficult.
It is a simple practice that can help bring the nervous system back towards a calmer state.
🌹 Before You Begin Tapping
Find a quiet space where you can speak aloud without judgment.
Bring to mind the workplace conversation that is still bothering you.
Notice what happens in your body.
Do you feel tension in your chest? A knot on your stomach?
Tightness in your jaw? Or perhaps a sense of frustration, disappointment or hurt?
Now rate the intensity of what you are feeling.
On a scale from 0 to 10:
0 being completely calm
10 being the highest level of intensity
This is your SUD level, which stands for Subjective Units of Distress.
There is no right or wrong answer. Simply notice what feels true for you.
Tapping Sequence One
When a Workplace Conversation Stays With You All Day

Setup Statements
(Side of the Hand Point)
Gently tap on the Side of the Hand Point while repeating each statement aloud.
"Even though i feel this tightness in my jaw every time I think about this workplace conversation, I choose to deeply and completely accept myself."
"Even though I feel frustrated and I can still feel it in my body while I keep replaying what happened, I honour my feelings and accept myself."
"Even though part of me feels hurt by what was said, I accept myself and how I am feeling."

Tapping Sequence Two
When You keep Wondering What They Think of You
Bring to mind the workplace conversation that continues to reply in your mind.
Perhaps you notice yourself thinking:
"Did I say the wrong thing?"
"I wish I had handled that differently."
"What are they thinking about me now?"
Notice what happens in your body.
Do you feel butterflies in your stomach? A tight chest? A racing mind?
Or a sense of anxiety about what happens next?
Notice what you feel in your body.
Gently rate the intensity from 0 to 10.

Take another slow breath. Re rate your SUD level. Notice any shift, even if it feels small.
Never underestimate the power of a small shift.
One calmer breath.
One softened muscle.
One racing thought that begins to quiet.
These moments may seem insignificant, yet they are often where meaningful change begins.
When your nervous system feels safer, there is more space between what happens... and how you choose to respond.
That space is where clarity begins.
That space is where wiser decisions are made.
That space is where confidence quietly returns.
That space is where you reconnect with yourself.
The goal is never to stop feeling.
Your emotions are not something to fear or fix.
They are gentle messengers inviting you to pause, listen and respond with compassion rather than criticism.
🌹 Like a rose, we flourish when the conditions are right.
