Why Do Meetings, Presentations + Interviews Trigger So Much Inner Tension?

Meetings. Presentations. Interviews. Visibility.

Moments like these ask us to be seen, heard and evaluated.

Even confident professionals can notice their nervous system tightening when attention turns toward them. The mind may know the material. The body may tell a different story.

A faster heartbeat. Tension in the chest or throat. Thoughts racing ahead of words.

I know this experience well. Before tapping found me, these were the exact sensations that would arise whenever I needed to speak up or be visible.

This response is deeply human.

When the brain senses the possibility of judgment or social evaluation, the nervous system can shift into protection mode. The body prepares for a threat even when you are simply sharing ideas in a meeting or presenting your work.

This protective response can appear as hesitation, mental blankness, self-doubt or the feeling that your voice is not landing with the clarity you intended.

You may know exactly what you want to say. Your nervous system may simply need reassurance that it is safe to say it.

🌹 Roses offer a quiet reminder here.

A rose stands tall without effort or apology. It does not force confidence. It grows from steady roots. When the nervous system feels regulated and supported, confidence emerges naturally.

What The Research Shows

Clinical research into Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), aka tapping, continues to show promising outcomes for stress and anxiety regulation. Work led by Australian clinical psychologist Dr Peta Stapleton has demonstrated that tapping can significantly reduce psychological distress while supporting nervous system balance.

Randomised controlled trials examining Clinical EFT have measured reductions in cortisol, the primary hormone associated with the body’s stress response. Participants practising tapping experienced reductions of more than 40% following the intervention, alongside improvements in emotional wellbeing.

Reviews of Clinical EFT research now identify more than 100 randomised controlled trials (RCTs) published demonstrating benefits for anxiety, trauma-related stress and emotional regulation. These studies also report physiological changes associated with nervous system calming, including improvements in heart rate variability and reductions in blood pressure.

These findings help explain why many people experience a noticeable sense of relief during tapping. By combining gentle acupressure stimulation with focused awareness of the emotional experience, the nervous system begins to shift from protection toward regulation.

When the body settles, clarity and presence often follow.

Tapping Sequence 1: When Your Nervous System Feels Activated Before Speaking

Use this sequence when pressure rises, thoughts feel noisy or your body feels tense and activated.

This sequence acknowledges the body’s protective response while gently guiding the nervous system toward regulation.

Step One: Rate the intensity of your tension from 0-10, where 10 represents the highest level of tension and 0 represents "I am completely relaxed."

Setup Statements

(Side of the Hand Point)

Gently tap on the Side of the Hand (SOH) Point while repeating each statement aloud. Allow your awareness to stay with where this tension lives in your body.

  1. "Even though my nervous system feels activated about being seen and evaluated, I choose to deeply and completely accept myself."

  2. "Even though my body is holding tension about speaking up, I deeply and completely love, honour and accept myself."

  3. "Even though a part of my system is trying to protect me from judgement, I accept myself and how I am feeling."

Tapping Sequence 2: Supporting Calm Confidence Before Visibility

This tapping sequence strengthens nervous system safety so your voice and ideas can come forward with clarity. Rate how steady you feel from 0-10, where 10 represents the highest level of unsteadiness and 0 represents "I am completely steady."

Setup Statements

Gently tap on the Side of the Hand (SOH) Point while repeating each statement aloud. Allow your awareness to stay with where this stress lives in your body.

  1. "Even though my nervous system associates visibility with pressure, I choose to deeply and completely accept myself."

  2. "Even though a part of me feels tension about speaking clearly, I honour and accept myself anyway."

  3. "Even though I want to feel calm and confident when I share my ideas, regulated and still highly capable, I deeply and completely love and accept myself."

Often, it is about whether your nervous system feels safe enough to express what you know.

When the stress response settles, your natural strengths become easier to access. Words flow more easily. Your presence becomes steadier.

Just like a rose that stands tall once its roots are supported, your voice grows stronger when your nervous system feels safe.
