How to Plant Rose Seeds of Curiosity + Self-Compassion with Emotional Freedom Techniques?

Did you know that the simple act of ‘Tapping’ on certain points of your body can release emotional blockages and foster a deep sense of self-compassion? In our fast-paced world, stress and emotions such as fear, guilt and shame can easily overwhelm us. Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), Energy Psychology, Breathwork and Mindfulness Practices are powerful techniques to manage these feelings. These modalities work together to help you explore your inner landscape, fostering a deeper understanding of your emotions and beliefs while cultivating self-compassion. Imagine your journey as tending to a Rose Garden within yourself, where each practice helps you cultivate a beautiful bloom of inner peace and self-awareness.

Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT)

Like skilled gardeners tending to the roots of a Rose plant, EFT, often referred to as ‘Tapping’ involves gently tapping on specific acupressure points on the body while focusing on an emotional issue. This technique can help clear emotional blockages, much like acupuncture, without the needles. It allows us to tap into the subconscious mind, unveiling hidden layers of our psyche and releasing stagnant energy and limiting beliefs that may hold us back.

Energy Psychology

Energy Psychology, which combines Eastern approaches to the mind and body with Western psychology such as Thought Field Therapy (TFT) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), can be an effective tool in addressing trauma. These modalities work by tackling the emotional and energetic components of trauma, facilitating the release of deeper emotional blockages and helping you align your energy system for emotional and mental wellness.

Research has shown that Energy Psychology techniques can be effective in treating trauma, particularly in reducing symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), anxiety and depression. By engaging with the body's energy systems and utilising specific protocols, Energy Psychology can help you process and release traumatic memories, promote emotional regulation and enhance overall emotional wellness.

It is important to note that trauma is a complex and individualised process. While EFT and Energy Psychology can be powerful tools, it may not be a standalone solution for everyone. A holistic approach to addressing trauma often involves a combination of therapies, including traditional psychotherapy, somatic experiencing, mindfulness practices and other complementary modalities.

Breathwork: The Power of Conscious Breathing

Breathwork involves intentional breathing exercises to promote physical, mental and emotional wellness. Conscious breathing can help calm the mind, reduce stress and enhance emotional clarity. Think of breathwork as the water that nourishes your Rose Garden, providing the essential hydration needed for growth and vitality.

A Simple Breathwork Exercise:

  1. Find a Comfortable Position: Sit or lie down in a comfortable position, ensuring your spine is straight.

  2. Close Your Eyes: Gently close your eyes to minimise distractions.

  3. Begin with Deep Breaths: Take a deep breath in through your nose, feeling your belly expand. Hold your breath for a count of six.

  4. Exhale Slowly: Exhale slowly through your mouth for a count of six, letting go of any tension. Repeat this process for 5-10 minutes.

You can explore various other breathwork techniques, such as box breathing, alternate nostril breathing, or breath of fire (dynamic Kundalini yoga breathing technique), to activate your body's innate restorative mechanisms and cultivate emotional resilience. As you practice breathwork, notice any emotions or thoughts that arise. Rather than suppressing or avoiding them, allow these experiences to surface with gentle curiosity. Remember to respond to your emotions with kindness and empathy, embracing your human experience with self-compassion.

Mindfulness: Being Present in the Moment

Mindfulness is the practice of bringing your attention to the present moment without judgment. It helps in developing a deeper awareness of your thoughts, emotions and bodily sensations. Think of mindfulness as the sunlight that your Rose Garden needs, providing warmth and energy for the Rose within to blossom fully.

A Basic Mindfulness Practice:

  1. Set Aside Time: Dedicate at least 5-10 minutes for this practice.

  2. Focus on Your Breath: Sit comfortably and focus your attention on your breath. Notice the sensation of the breath entering and leaving your body, allowing your awareness to rest in the present moment.

  3. Observe Without Judgment: As thoughts arise, acknowledge them without judgment and gently bring your focus back to your breath.

  4. Expand Your Awareness: Gradually expand your awareness to include bodily sensations, sounds and your surroundings.

Integrating EFT, Breathwork and Mindfulness

Combining these modalities can amplify their benefits, helping you plant Rose seeds of curiosity and self-compassion. Here is a comprehensive exercise integrating all three techniques, allowing your inner Rose Garden to flourish:

A Comprehensive Exercise:

  1. Identify an Emotion:

  • Begin by identifying an emotion you want to address. Rate its intensity on a scale of 0-10.

  1. Breathwork to Centre Yourself:

  • Sit comfortably, close your eyes and take deep breaths. Inhale deeply through your nose, hold for six counts and exhale slowly through your mouth for six counts. Repeat this for 5 minutes to calm your mind and body, like watering your Rose Garden to prepare the soil.

  1. Clinical EFT Tapping:

  • Start tapping on the side of your hand point while repeating a setup statement, like “Even though I feel anxious, I choose to accept myself and how my body is feeling.”

  • Tap through the following points: top of the head, eyebrow, side of the eye, under the eye, under the nose, chin, collarbone and under the arm points, while repeating a reminder phrase like “this anxiety,” “I feel it in my stomach,” “like a tightly coiled python” etc.

  • Reassess the intensity of the emotion and repeat if necessary. This tapping process helps clear the weeds from your garden, allowing your Rose to grow unhindered.

  1. Mindfulness Practice:

  • After Tapping, sit quietly and bring your attention to your breath. Notice the rise and fall of your abdomen with each breath. Allow thoughts and feelings to come and go without judgment. Stay in this mindful state for 5-10 minutes, soaking in the sunlight that nurtures your Rose Garden.
