3 Sign Your Stress Response Is Stuck in a Loop (and What Actually Resets It)

Most people trying to manage stress are aiming at the mind when the problem lives in the body. The body responds to sensation, not argument.

Here are three signs it is the stress response itself stuck in a loop, not only the situation that triggered it.

1. The reaction outlasts the event.

Something happens on Monday. By Wednesday the situation is resolved. Your body has not caught up: shoulders still tight, sleep still off. That gap, between what happened and how long the body holds it, is one of the clearest signs of a pattern running instead of a response to the present.

2. You can name the trigger and it still happens anyway.

This is the one that convinces people something is wrong with them. You know exactly what sets you off. You have said it out loud, maybe in therapy, maybe to a friend. And it still happens. That is not a failure of insight. It is evidence this was never a thinking problem. Stress responses live in the body, not in the story told about them, which is why understanding the trigger rarely disarms it on its own.

3. Calm has become something you perform.

You can look composed in a meeting, in a negotiation. Still bracing underneath. Performed calm is exhausting in its own way: it takes real effort to hold a state your body has not reached yet.

What actually resets a loop like this

Talking about the pattern rarely interrupts it. The pattern is not stored in language. Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) aka tapping works on the body directly: acupressure points paired with naming the emotion, while staying connected to what is triggering you instead of avoiding it or getting swept up in it. That combination lets the nervous system complete a response it has been holding, instead of managing around it.

A rose does not choose between the thorn and the bloom. Both hold at once. That is closer to what this work asks of the body too: not clearing the alarm to get to calm but letting both exist until the alarm has somewhere to go.

A starting sequence, for sign #1

If Monday's reaction is still running your Wednesday, here is a place to begin.

Find a quiet space where you can speak aloud without judgment.

Bring to mind the moment from Monday, the one your body is still reacting to. Notice what is happening underneath. Tension in the chest? A knot in the stomach? Tightness in the jaw? Or maybe it is not physical at all: frustration, disappointment or hurt that has not moved yet.

Now rate the intensity of what you are feeling, on a scale from 0 to 10:

  • 0 being completely calm

  • 10 being the highest level of intensity

This is your SUD level, which stands for Subjective Units of Distress. There is no answer to get right here. Notice what feels true for you.

Setup, tapping the Side of Hand (SOH) point, repeated three times:

  1. "Even though part of me is still bracing from what happened, I deeply and completely accept myself."

  2. "Even though this reaction has stuck around longer than the moment that caused it, I deeply and completely love and accept myself anyway."

  3. "Even though my body has not caught up with what is actually true right now, I deeply and completely love, honour and accept myself."

Move through the points: eyebrow, side of eye, under eye, under nose, chin, collarbone and teh under arm. Repeat a short reminder phrase each time: "still bracing," "this old alarm."

Rate the tension again. Most people notice a shift after even one round: movement, not full resolution.

That is as far as a self-guided round takes you. The fuller sequence, the one that clears what is underneath the bracing instead of easing it, is what we work through together in a session.

These three signs are not a character issue. They are a system doing exactly what it learned to do, likely for a long time, with no one telling it any different.

If you recognised yourself in even one of these, thank you for staying with it this far.

That is not a small thing to look at directly.

This is fixable in a session, not only as an insight. If you would like to see what that looks like in practice, I would love to talk. 🌹✨
